Liturgical Ministers for Christmas

Carmel Bulletin, 29 November 2015

As the season of preparation for Christmas is now upon us, we are beginning to invite liturgical ministers to serve at our Christmas Masses.

Christmas Ministry Sign Up SheetYou will find sign-up sheets as usual in the parish centre today.  We need assistance in the following roles:

  • Greeters
  • Computer operators for the data projector
  • Head collection wardens
  • Offertory procession
  • Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Altar servers can sign up to help on the sheet in the work sacristy, while Ministers of the Word should have received an email this week asking whether they will be available at Christmas time.

This year at our Christmas Masses, we will be posting a sheet on the whiteboard in the parish centre of all the volunteers who have signed up.  When ministers arrive at Mass to serve, we ask that you “sign in” on the sheet so that we can quickly check that ministers are present, and if we need to find replacements.  This will help us ensure that our Christmas Masses go as smoothly as possible.

I thank all our liturgical ministers for their continued commitment to our community.  Please consider serving at what is a very important time in the Church’s year, and a crucial time for welcoming parishioners and visitors alike.

20/1/12 – Children’s Liturgy of the Word Ministry Formation Workshops

Our parish’s liturgical celebrations depend on the generous service of our liturgical ministers.  One of our responsibilities as a parish is to ensure that we provide our ministers with support and resources as they engage in their ministry.

In February, we will be supporting our Ministers of Children’s Liturgy of the Word.  Formation workshops will take place at the following times:

  • Saturday 2 February at 9:45 am in the parish centre, or
  • Tuesday 5 February at 7:30 pm in the parish centre.

Ministers are asked to register in the parish centre to indicate when they will be attending.  Alternatively, you can register online at www.olmcwenty.org.au/clow

At 9:00 am Mass on Sunday 10 February, we will commission our Ministers of the Children’s Liturgy of the Word to serve for the coming year.  Children’s Liturgy of the Word will then commence on Sunday 17 February.

We look forward to being able to support our parishioners in their service to our community.

23/9/12 – Fifty Years Since Vatican II – Ministry

During this Year of Grace, we have been invited to revisit the constitutions of the Second Vatican Council, which began fifty years ago this year.  The first of these constitutions was on the liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium.

The constitution continued on naturally from the topic of participation to speak more specifically about liturgical ministry.  It began by stating that any ordained or lay person fulfilling a ministerial role should undertake only the one role during a celebration, and undertake all the duties of that role.  The importance of liturgical ministers as leaders of prayer was emphasised; that ministers should carry out their duties in an appropriate manner, and be properly formed and trained for their role.

Sacrosanctum Concilium, however, also noted the liturgical role of the assembly or congregation – that in fact all people have a part to play in the celebration.  The constitution’s call for full, conscious and active participation was misunderstood by some people, who interpreted this as an insistence that everybody had to have a “ministry” to take part in.  The role of the assembly, as articulated in the constitution, however, gives a clearer picture of what was intended:

To promote active participation, the people should be encouraged to take part by means of acclamations, responses, psalmody, antiphons, and songs, as well as by actions, gestures, and bodily attitudes. And at the proper times all should observe a reverent silence.  (Sacrosanctum Concilium, article 30)

4/10/09 – Formation Workshops for Liturgical Ministers

We are now into the month of October. The last month has been a wonderful time of celebration, as our young parishioners completed their sacramental initiation into the Catholic Church.

We now take some time during the month of November to focus on some of the liturgical ministries in our parish.

Altar Servers. The time to register to participate in this ministry is now. To register, visit our parish website, www.olmcwenty.org.au/altarservers or call Fr. Paul on 9631 8302. This ministry is open to any male or female parishioner who has been fully initiated into the Catholic Church (i.e., has received the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and communion).

Ministers of the Word and Ministers of Communion. Each October, these ministers take time to engage in continuing formation for their ministry. Attendance at the annual formation workshop is one of the expectations of those who participate in these ministries and is required of every minister. People interested in becoming a Minister of Communion may also attend the workshop in preparation. The dates for the workshops are below.

We look forward to being able to support our parishioners in their service to our community as liturgical ministers.
